In the age of Samhan, Yangju was part of Mahan. Although the city was in Baekje territory during the era of the Three Kingdoms, it became known as 'Maeseong-gun' or 'Changhwa-gun' when the territory came under the control of Goguryeo. Later, it was returned to Baekje.
The city belonged to Raeso-gun during King Gyeongdeok's reign (757) during the United Silla Era and to Gyeonju (King Taejo's reign, Goryeo Dynasty) and Goeup-ri, Junae-myeon in the 6th year of King Taejo's reign (1397).
